SRM Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) has established the Abdul Kalam Distinguished Professorship. This professorship is named to honor the memory of India’s beloved President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
Candidates for this professorship must hold an appropriate earned doctorate. An outstanding research and publications record and wide name recognition are required in Science and Technology, Management or Humanities. The Abdul Kalam Distinguished Professor is expected to provide new impetus for anchoring one specialized area within the curricula and programs of the Faculties in the university. The Distinguished Professor would become a catalyst for focusing on creative methods for introducing a specialized field to both students and faculty. More specifically, the professor is expected to:
Take leadership role in designing an integrated strategy for incorporating a particular field or sub-field into the curricula of various programs. In this role, the Distinguished Professor would organize a faculty task force to assess the extent and effectiveness of the current curriculum, develop new methods and approaches for teaching and play a central role in implementing the strategy.
Take leadership in teaching and organizing seminars/workshops in a specialized field.
Organize major public events at the University. This would involve developing a strong network of scientists, engineers, corporate leaders, including alumni, and scholars to bring key people to campus to meet with students and faculty.
Engage in leading edge scholarship in the field. The Distinguished Professor should be visible within, and contribute to, the community of researchers focused on science and engineering. His or her research could focus on a variety of areas in science and engineering.
Develop strong relationships with other scholars in the field.
Provide a reasoned and knowledgeable voice in the public debate in her/his chosen field. The professor could serve as an expert to provide an informed comprehensive perspective on his/her area to the media. The professor could also act as a resource to industry and government.
This is an honorary position. However, the selected Professor will be given suitable travel assistance and hotel accommodation during their stay on campus. A discretionary fund of up to Rupees three lakhs per year will be sequestered for this position.
The decision regarding appointment is determined by the Vice Chancellor following the recommendation of a search committee.
